Palm oil has a bad press due to its perceived cholesterol-raising effect. A study has demonstrated the fact that palm oil doesn’t have a significant effect on bad cholesterol compared to other oils, just much less compared to low-saturated vegetable oils. Cholesterol is one important risk for heart disease but it is not a direct cause of heart disease. Palm oil is the first vegetable oil consumed worldwide (35% vs soybean oil 27%), for 2 reasons:
– Economic: cheapest to produce
– Culinary: can be reused, good texture, neutral taste and smell, resistant to oxidation.
And palm oil is a source of carotenes and tocotrienols.
