Renewable natural rubber’s essential role in our sustainable mobility

14 novembre 2018

Of the 800 million vehicles currently on the road, 1.2 billion tires have been manufactured with more than 10 million tonnes of natural rubber, and the number of vehicles is expected to double in 25 years. The transport sector consumes 3/4 of rubber production compared to 1/4 for health sector. Natural rubber is a completely renewable resource because: rubber trees store CO2 (up to 20x more than some plantations), trees have a second life cycle as biomass or in furniture production, the sector provides 20 million indirect jobs, it provides income throughout the year. In Côte d’Ivoire, some plantations have a yield of 2.2 T/ha/year while Indonesia, the world’s second largest producer, has a yield of 1.1 T/ha/year, which could increase with the implementation of good agricultural practices. Since 2015, Michelin has implemented an application, Rubberway, to map risks and identify best practices in the regions concerned.
